Information about LORIENT Lorient is situated on the south coast of Brittany in the west of France. It is famous for its coastline which ranges from the sandy beaches of Larmor Plage to hidden coves in the west. The hinterland is hilly wooded country with small villages with beautiful churches and chapels from the 11th to the 15th century. You are now in the heart of Southern Brittany, an area of amazing diversity. This is where rivers meet the sea. The lush green valleys of the Blavet, the Scorff and the Laita carry rivers, which rise in the highlands of the Breton interior. The fresh water mixes with the salt waters of the Celtic Sea and the Gulf of Gascony in one of the loveliest bays in France. Protected by the mysterious Island of Groix, the Bay of Lorient has offered shelter to sailors since Neolithic times. The Compagnies des Indes (French East India Companies) were founded here. During the 18th century, they brought to Lorient the pungent smell of spices and the taste of salt. Lorient has also been shaped by the Royal Navy, the fishing industry and other sea trades. The town became an important witness to the history of the 20th century during the Battle of the Atlantic. These seafaring people, anchored to their Celtic roots opened this region up to the world and they welcome you.
